2011年8月1日开始将实行改革以后的GRE考试(以下简称新GRE)，其中语文部分变化较大。本文以语文部分新增的文本完成题(Text completion questions)为例说明如何应对新GRE。
文本完成题对应一段文章，有1至3个空，每个空对应三个选项(只有整个段落仅包含一个空时，才出现五个选项)，与目前实行的GRE考试的填空题设置1－2空、每个空都对应五个选项不同。而且，目前的GRE考试的填空题强调词汇的辨认与逻辑关系的把握。例如，
Number theory is rich in problems of an especially----sort: they are tantalizingly simple to state but----difficult to solve。
(A) cryptic.. deceptively
(B) spurious.. equally
(C) abstruse.. ostensibly
(D) elegant.. rarely

本题有两个空，答案是E。本句的意思是：“数论中所包含的大量问题具有一种特别令人苦恼的性质：它们陈述起来简单得诱人，但是解决起来又是出了名的难。”要做好本题，必须认识题中的tantalizingly(逗引性地，诱人地)以及五个选项中、尤其是E选项中(vexing：令人苦恼的；notorious：臭名昭著的；众所周知的)的高级词汇。此外，还必须理解冒号的作用(后半部分解释前半部分)以及but所连接的前后两个部分之间的逻辑关系。

由首句中的冒号可知，前两个空的答案应该是同义词，符合要求的分别是overshadowed(掩盖)与obscure(掩盖)。至于第三个空，空格之前的and暗示要填的答案与前面的gaps(空白)和sparseness(稀少)属于同一个语义场，即都表示“有不足”之义，有类似贬义倾向的只有superficiality of our theories(我们理论的肤浅)，因此本段落的正确答案是：
overshadowed、obscure与superficiality of our theories。注意：只要任何一个空选错，整个段落的答案就算全部错误。
由此可见，只要抓准了方向，就能在新GRE中立于不败之地。
